About the IAT

The International Association of Trichologists (IAT) is a non-profit corporation founded in California in 1974 to promote the study, research and legitimate practice in all aspects of the treatment and care of the human hair and scalp in health and disease.

The trichology course was developed at the University of Southern California during 1974-75 under the guidance of trichologist David Salinger.

The course was designed as a home-study (correspondence) course and, additionally, one hundred hours of clinical training must be undertaken under the supervision of an IAT-approved trichologist.

Students can presently undertake clinical training in Australia, India, Brazil, the U.S.A., Canada, Kenya, the United Arab Emirates and the U.K. Online lectures are also included. The course has been translated into Russian, Portuguese and Spanish.

IAT has trained students in several other countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, Singapore, China, South Africa, South Korea, U.K., Ireland, Malaysia, Vietnam, Latvia, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Mauritius, Indonesia, Japan, Israel, Russia, Sweden, Poland, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Mongolia, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Germany, Portugal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. The shorter “Hair Practitioner” course is now also very popular and has been translated into Chinese.

Requirements for the Successful Completion of the Course

  • Students enrolling in the course must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Two months are allowed for the completion of each section of the course. Hence, the student is expected to complete the entire written part of the course within two years. However, you go at your own speed and some students complete the course in under a year. At the end of most modules, competency is tested with a written test which is sent to the course administrator for assessment.
  • Eight hundred and fifty hours of study will enable most students to complete the written part of the course. On top of this, five days of clinical training must be undertaken, either during or after the theoretical part of the course, under the supervision of a certified trichologist with at least one year of full-time clinical experience and authorised by IAT to supervise such training. Two of the days (16 hours) are completed online and the other three days are completed at an authorised trichology clinic. The cost of this training is not included in the cost of the course. The present cost is US$2000.00 for the five days. Clinical training can be undertaken in Australia, USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, The United Arab Emirates, UK, and Kenya.
  • At the completion of all practical and theoretical work, a written examination will be administered under supervision. Certification will be awarded to those students reaching the required level of competency. Certified Trichologists can then join the International Association of Trichologists as members (cost is US$250 per year) and may use the letters “IAT” after their name and may use the “Certified Trichologist” logo.
  • The student’s ability to exit and re-enter the course is not restricted by the structure of the course. Those students who complete units of competency can obtain a statement of academic record if requested.
  • Employment openings for certified trichologists will be advertised in the IAT newsletter. Most trichologists work for themselves and it must be realised that it takes time to build up a successful practice.

Policies

Recognition of Prior Learning

Assessment of prior learning is available to all participants. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) acknowledges the skills and knowledge obtained through formal training (conducted by industry or recognised educational institutions), work experience, and life experience. The main focus is on the learning outcomes of these experiences, not the how, when or where the learning occurred. Only those participants who feel their knowledge will enable them to pass the final exam without undertaking the written course may request such an opportunity. In order to gain RPL, participants must submit a formal request in writing along with evidence of your qualifications, which may include certification, references from employers, references from clients and examples of your work. A fee of US$300.00 will be charged for this assessment.

If the request is approved, you will be allowed to take the final exam without enrolling in the written program. In such a case, an additional fee of US$300.00 will be charged. Prior to awarding certification, five days of clinical training must be completed under the supervision of a certified trichologist with at least one year of full-time clinical experience and authorised by IAT to supervise such training. The present cost is US$2000.00 for the five days. Certification will be awarded to those participants that demonstrated the required level of competency. Certified Trichologists can then join the International Association of Trichologists as members (cost is US$250 per year) and may use the letters “IAT” after their name and may use the “Certified Trichologist” logo.

Articulation & Credit Transfer

Applications for credit or status for entry into the course will be determined on the basis of consideration of official transcripts of academic record from the appropriate college or institute.

Privacy Policy

IAT is required to collect and store personal information in order to administer applications, enrolment and monitor academic progress. We will ensure that information collected is only used for the purpose for which it was collected.

Student Support Services and Complaints Mechanism

Students will be in constant contact with the course administrator, David Salinger, who will supervise training. Any questions, problems with the course or complaints should be addressed to Mr. Salinger at the International Association of Trichologists. Any complaint, appeal and its outcome will be recorded by IAT in writing. Each appeal will be heard by an independent person or panel, and each appellant will be given the opportunity to formally present his or her case. The appellant will be given a written statement of the appeal outcome, including reasons for the decision.

Access & Equity

IAT is committed to equitable access to vocational education for everybody. We will attempt to achieve equal educational and vocational outcomes for all of our students.
